01 / Popsicles: the coolest way to cool off. This summer I’ve been blending up my pops with speckled bananas and cinnamon, dark leafy greens, and bright citrus and herbs. The possibilities are endless. Cool, man.
02/ Union Market: A vibrant and community centered DC culinary epicenter, packed to the brim with bright food, bright people, and creativity up the wazoo. Here’s where you’ll find me:
- Salt & Sundry: dare I say the most beautifully (and creatively) curated shop in the city, Amanda McClements’s Salt & Sundry sells everything from indigo dyed lush pillows to sea salt sprinkled caramel chocolate bars. Sorry, wallet, you will want everything.
- TaKorean: BOWL: extra Napa-romaine slaw, pan-seared hoisin caramelized tofu, Sriracha, cilantro & sesame seeds. PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
- Buffalo & Bergen: bagels (‘nuff said?)
03/ Big Spoon Roasters: for as long as I can remember,my little brother and I would battle over Reese’s Cups on Halloween. We’d pile our curated candies in the center of the living room and strategically make trades, determined to end up with the most peanut butter packed morsels- we were hooked. Flash-forward 15+ years, we still love us some nut butter; there’s something so inherently comforting, salty, divine. A few months ago I came across Big Spoon Roasters, a North Carolina based nut butter company (peanut, almond, cashew, brazil nut) boasting big time flavors like: cacao nib peanut butter with stone ground chocolate and crystalized Fiji ginger almond butter- GAME. CHANGER. These beautifully hand-packaged nut butter wonders are made with fresh runner variety North Carolina peanuts and an exotic array of perfectly combined spices and morsels from trusted and transparent farms and producers. I was instantly drawn to Big Spoon Roasters’ chai spice nut butter with warming cardamom, cloves, and ginger. I love it thickly spread on a crusty piece of toasty hearty bread with even thicker rounds of speckled banana. (Note: Big Spoon Roasters’ nut butters are made with wildflower honey from the North Carolina Piedmont).
04/ Khai Khai: ever the sucker for a gloriously massaged kale salad + offbeat accessory, it seems the (MY) worlds of healthful food and corky fashion have finally collided- trend at its peak? All thanks to Haim Medine, the unconventional jewelry designer behind this ode to the king of greens necklace. Now I can eat my kale and wear it too, valiantly showing off my plant-eating dedication to the world (for a mere $750; too bad Hanukkah’s still 5 months away..).
05/ Great Bean: the day I discovered cacao (pronounced ka-kow, like ka-pow!) -chocolate in its rawest and most natural form- was a magical, magical day. Chocolaty and somewhat bitter in taste, cacao is one of the highest dietary sources of magnesium, known to help maintain healthy nerves, muscles and bones, contains sulfur which builds strong nails, hair, and skin, and packs a zing of caffeine and age-battling and cancer-fighting antioxidants. A few months back I was introduced to a beautifully handcrafted Austin, Texas based cacao chocolatier- Great Bean. Great Bean’s cacao chocolate bars, made with lightly roasted raw cacao beans, are nothing short of chocolate-lovers-bliss. Aptly named Bliss, Energy, Focus, Love, and Mineral, each bar is made with adaptogenic herbal blends, superfoods, and minerals, specifically curated to leave you feeling amazing. I was (am) particularly drawn to Great Bean’s Mineral bar. Boasting raw almonds, smokey black lava salt, shilajit, dandelion and nettle leaf, and horsetail, this clean, superb bar is on point.
