When Andrew and I moved back to Washington, DC after a year in Manhattan, NY, eating out seemed like more of a chore than anything. ‘Vegan’ hadn’t really hit this city, which left me in a land of fried tofu, tempeh dogs, and vegan cheese substitute (aka famished). Having come from raw-centric grocery stores, juice bars, and superfoods for days, the change was drastic and bothersome. There was no where to go, so we didn’t go anywhere. And then we found Sweetgreen.
The DC food scene, plant based and otherwise, has erupted over the last 18 months. More restaurants are beginning to offer or accommodate a meal for the plant eater, more coffee shops have soy/almond/hemp milk for my coffee, I think sorbet is now a thing? That being said, Andrew and I love us some Sweetgreen, what I can only describe as my ‘salad mecca’. Not only are their salads inspiring, vibrant, and overflowing with greens, but they boasts a strong commitment to local, organic, and sustainable agriculture, nutrition education for children, and to getting us active with their passport exercise programs- all good things.
This Saturday, Sweetgreen is hosting its fifth annual Sweetlife Festival- an all day event featuring Lana Del Ray, Foster the People (LOVE.), Fitz & The Tantrums etc. etc. and a farmer’s market packed with so many insanely delicious local vendors I can’t even contain myself. I am so excited to be attending Sweetlife as a VIP guest- for those of you attending the festival, or looking for exciting places to try in the DC/VA/MD area if you’re ever here for a visit, here’s a sneak peak of my must-hit spots and what you’ll find on my plant based & vegan festival plate.
