Today I underwent a pretty monumental oral surgery; not so much because it was painful or physically traumatic, but because the end is finally in sight. For those who’ve been following ‘In My Bowl’ for a while, and for those with fresher eyes, my mouth is ‘problematic’. Over the past fifteen months I’ve had five oral surgeries in this mellow-dramatic attempt to put a front tooth in my mouth (etc. etc.)- you’d think I’d know my oral surgeon’s first name by now. Today marked surgery #5. Although it went radiantly well, I was prescribed a five day mandatory liquid/soft food diet: soups, stews, curries, smoothies & nourishing, nourishing juices. At this point, I am an old pro!
I’ve shared so many soup and curry recipes from my soft-food-diet adventures, but today, as the weather is finally warming up, I want to share my go-to post oral surgery juice (yes, I have a go-to post oral surgery juice) which also happens to be one of my favorite, and most hydrating juices up my sleeve: my Carrot, Cucumber & Ginger juice. Here’s why:
Carrots: carrot juice is not only smooth, creamy, and sweet, but packed with vitamin A. Vitamin A is important for maintaining optimal eyesight, bight, glowing skin, and aids in wound healing and liver cleansing. Carrots are also a well known antiseptic, important for keeping a wound sight clean from the inside-out.
Cucumber: cucumber juice is known for its cooling, calming, and hydrating properties. Cucumber is also anti-inflammatory- perfect for if you’re experiencing swelling or sore muscles.
Ginger: fresh ginger is also exceptionally anti-inflammatory and is also a recognized natural painkiller.
The most important thing to remember, whether you’ve undergone a surgery, a trauma, or an incredibly taxing exercise, is to fill your body with the nutrition it needs to ward off infection, regenerate, and optimally heal. In this state, your body is burning more energy, so it is your job to provide it the nutrients it needs, and enough of them, so you can get back on your feet sooner.
