Over the next three days I am going to be partaking in and sharing my experience on an all raw juice cleanse: provided by South Block Juice Co. in Arlington, Virginia. I am so excited to get started [the juices all sound amazing!], but before I begin this three day journey, I want to make sure my intentions are very clear.
My Philosophy: I am always very hesitant recommending anyone do a raw juice cleanse; so often the intention is not to “cleanse”, but to expedite weight loss. No different than any other ‘fad-diet’ in our marketplace, it worries me that so many in our society believe long-term weight loss and maintenance can be achieved without intentional lifestyle and behavioral modifications. Although the raw juices are packed with an insurmountable amount of incredible and easily assimilated nutrients, unless you go into the cleanse with a clear long-term plan for life afterwards- for instance the reduced consumption of processed foods, incorporation of more plant based foods in the diet, a greener juice with a meal each day, dedication to an exercise regiment- then I really believe the cleanse will not only be a waste of your time and finances, but will serve no other purpose than as a quick and temporary weight loss solution. No weight loss will be maintained unless behavioral changes are made as well.
I am an avid raw juice consumer, juice maker, and juice lover. I am participating in this cleanse to give my digestive system, body, and mind the much needed break I think it deserves from the stressors I encounter day-to-day, and instead just let food, in its simplest form, nourish me. That being said, I’d like to also make very clear I try to keep my body “clean” on a daily basis through a primarily natural, unprocessed, and plant based diet. “Clean” eating is my lifestyle! After all, you only get one body. Over the next three days I am going to be actively sharing photos and experiences from my juice cleanse; welcome to my journey!
DAY ONE (A RECAP)
Going into day one of a raw juice cleanse I felt excited and empowered. So often, our day-to-day lives are filled with stressors; the prospect of giving my physical and mental body an excused three day break to instead focus on me and my introspective experience, well that seemed unreal. After all, my confidence was through the roof: over the past twelve months, I’ve undergone quite a few extensive oral surgeries resulting in weeks of ‘liquid only’ diets, I knew I had this in the bag. I was recognizably reluctant- it wasn’t the fear of hunger, a break in confidence, or a fear of missing chewing, but this baffling mentality that I’d be missing out.
I am very lucky in that one of my best friends insisted on cleansing with me. A cleanse is a very personal experience, but having a similarly motivating, passionate, and empowered companion can make all the difference. What is so difficult about a cleanse, at least for me, is not the act of not eating, but the fact that unless you surround yourself with fellow cleansers or completely clear your schedule, life is going on around you and it feels nearly impossible not to participate. Examples here would include: weekend lunch dates, cozy brunches, and coffee shop nibbles. It really doesn’t become evident, until you’re unable to participate, just how much of our (my) culture is food-centric.
All of this being said, I made it through day one of this journey. My skin looks and feels clearer and my body feels light. Not in the sense of empty or hungry, but completely un-bloated. Each of South Block Juice Co.’s juices tasted so fresh, vibrant, and truly alive. Their juices are not only made with raw vegetables, but many incorporate spices and herbs like turmeric, cayenne, mint, and parsley that were so nourishing and refreshing (honestly, YUM!)
I would love to hear about any cleansing experiences you’ve had, or any words of encouragement or advice you could pass forward to other readers to help with their cleansing journeys!
-Cheers to day two xx
Each day of the cleanse consists of five vibrant and raw vegetable juices and one creamy nut ‘mylk’: detox, glow, greens, cure, renew and caveman.
DAY TWO (A RECAP)
I wanted to use my day two recap to discuss the basics structure of the South Block Juice Co. three day cleanse I’m participating in, as well as those of many on the market. I think sometimes the word “cleanse” can connote spa-chic, which I suppose it can be-I mean how luxurious is it to basque yourself in the glory of nutrients- but I want to be sure everyone understands the actual gist.
- Each morning of your cleanse should begin with a glass of hot water (or coffee if you’re a sneaky cleanser) to get your bowels moving and wake up your entire digestive system.
- The first juice is usually a greener juice, thought to be the gentlest way to get your body systems alert and revived after a night’s sleep.
- After that, four additional raw green, mixed vegetable, or fruit juices are dispersed throughout your day, at least one-two hours apart depending on your level of hunger.
- Each day ends with a creamy nut ‘milk’ which should be consumed at least two hours before bed; because the nut ‘milk’ has the most fat and protein of any of the juices, it will keep you full throughout the night and enable a restful sleep.
- It is crucial that throughout the entirety of your cleanse you consume at least 8 cups of water, green tea, and/or herbal tea over the course of each day to assist your body in flushing out and eliminating any stored toxins.
Admittingly my energy levels were lower on day two than day one while exercising: I may have spent the majority of my yoga class in child’s pose. I won’t get too sciency, but each of us has something called a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), which is the amount of energy, based on our height, weight, muscle composition, genetics, etc., that we burn at rest. For me, if I were to spend the entire day laying on my back, not moving, not doing a single thing but laying on my back, my body burns an estimated 1,250 calories (as I just mentioned, each person’s RMR is completely different based on personal factors, so please don’t use my number as a baseline for yourself). What this number means is, that on any given typical day, my caloric intake should really never fall bellow 1,250; there is absolutely no reason- not even if I were trying to lose weight. The juice cleanse that I am participating in contains about 1200 calories/day, leaving me justifiably a bit tired throughout a workout. Three days at a lower caloric intake than your RMR will not be harmful- there is actually extensive evidence on the longterm benefits of intermittent fasting on longevity and brain cognizance- but it is importance to understand that exercise will have to be modified or forgone to ensure optimal energy levels. A casual walk, lazy bike ride, or yoga class in child’s pose is really all you’ll need.
Anyways, Washington, DC is now covered in snow and I can’t wait to get outside and play in it!!
-Cheers to day three xx
DAY THREE (A RECAP)
I am writing this recap having finished my cleanse and sitting here with a pretty massive and insanely delicious bright green smoothie. After three days of juice cleansing, I not only feel so accomplished, light, bright, and more in tune with my body’s metabolism and hunger signals than I’d ever imagined, but re-motivated and inspired to continue living and sharing my plant based and positive lifestyle. Clean eating isn’t a cleanse but a conscious lifestyle choice to empower your life, health, and overall wellbeing.
Cheers to a beautiful today- xx
