Today I want to share one of my absolute favorite, bright and cleansing green smoothie recipes: Alkalizing Green Mango, Banana & Wheatgrass Smoothie. I love beginning my mornings with lots of nourishing and alkalizing greens and citrus and this smoothie ties all of those flavors together perfectly. Alkalizing foods, such as fruits, vegetables and wheatgrass, soybeans and tofu, nuts, seeds, and legumes are not only nutrient packed and inherently healthful, but alkaline-promoting foods which are thought to help prevent kidney stones, keep bones and muscles strong, improve heart health and brain function, and lower our risk for chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
This bright green raw and vegan smoothie is made with organic whole leaf wheatgrass powder, loaded with chlorophyll, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and E. Wheatgrass is widely known for its detoxifying and cleansing properties, is a natural immune system booster, and has been shown to keep skin clear and glowing (something I can 100% attest to!). Although I prefer to drink fresh pressed wheatgrass when I can, having wheatgrass powder in my pantry is convenient and requires no maintenance. For this recipe, I used Organic Burst wheatgrass powder. Organic Burst’s wheatgrass powder is organic, gluten free, and they use the whole fiber containing wheat leaf. Their powder is fresh, delicious, and not overpowering, perfect for those who may feel off put or nervous about trying it.
Although this fruity smoothie is packed with so many fresh greens, don’t feel intimidated! I promise you’ll taste the tropical and energizing mango and banana goodness sip after sip. This smoothie is caloric enough to constitute a lighter breakfast or snack, but if you are looking for a heartier meal, feel free to serve your smoothie with a thick slice of crusty toast with avocado or with a bowl of fresh berries and coconut yogurt.
Alkalizing Green Mango, Banana & Wheatgrass Smoothie [makes 1 smoothie]
1 cup raw coconut water
1 large banana, frozen
½ cup mango, frozen
1 big handful (about 1 cup) kale
10 sprigs cilantro
juice of ½ a lime
1 teaspoon wheatgrass powder
There isn’t much to do for this recipe, but blend and enjoy! Place all of the ingredients in a high speed blender. I use a VitaMix because it is so thorough at blending, but any blender will do. Blend for about 45 seconds, or until desired consistency is reached. Pour the smoothie into your favorite glass.
