“Let food by thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” -Hypocrites
Two weeks ago I underwent extensive oral surgery. In a valiant attempt to comfort me Andrew pulled together every pre-wedding gift card and Bed Bath & Beyond coupon code he could find and bought me a VitaMix blender so I could spend the preceding few weeks of recovery basking on the glory of perfectly macerated food. He sprung for the Vega One Nutritional Powder and ensured we had a vat of green juice hanging out in the fridge for my convenience post surgery. We found it comical and ironic my oral surgeon suggested I consume a diet of mashed potatoes, ice cream and a ‘healthy’ dose of antibiotics post surgery and thus took my diet and recovery into our own hands.
More nutrients are necessary for optimal recovery from any type of surgery, exercise, or long week than a mashed potato smothered in butter and cream has the backbone to provide. Instead, I’ve been cramming myself pact full of vegetable and fruit smoothies; specifically dark green vegetables and orange vegetables: like broccoli, kale, spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes, all Vitamin A dense. Vitamin A helps the body resist infection and allows the body to use its reserves for regenerating tissue, leading to quicker recovery! Perfect!
Regardless of if you’re recovering from oral surgery, an extensive workout, or a long week at the office, [or just want a nourishing breakfast] this green smoothie is the perfect delicious and nutrient packed treat to get you back on your feet.
Green Banana & Chia Smoothie [serves 1]
1 whole banana, frozen
1 cup spinach, fresh and raw
1 cup kale, fresh and raw-hard stems removed
1 cup almond milk
2 tablespoons Vega One Nutritional Powder (natural flavor) // complete protein powder of choice
.5 tablespoons black chia seeds
There isn’t much to do for this recipe, but blend and enjoy! Place all of the ingredients in a high speed blender. I use a VitaMix because it is so thorough at blending, but any blender will do. Blend for about 45 seconds, or until desired consistency is reached. Pour the smoothie into your favorite glass.
